GENOA, Italy (AP) — Genoa hired former Italy coach Cesare Prandelli on Friday to replace Ivan Juric, who was fired by the club for a third time following poor results. Genoa made the announcement a day after the team was knocked out of the Italian Cup by third-division club Virtus Entella, losing on penalties after a 3-3 draw. Prandelli steered Italy to the final of the 2012 European Championship, where it lost to Spain. He resigned after the Italians were knocked out of the group stage at the 2014 World Cup. The 61-year-old Prandelli's career has slowed since and he had brief stints at Galatasaray, Valencia and Al-Nasr. Juric secured an improbable point at Juventus in his first match in charge,

Far-right Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said Monday that urgent action was needed after a young referee was attacked following a weekend match in the region of Lazio surrounding Rome. Riccardo Bernardini, 24, suffered head injuries after being set upon following a match between Virtus Olympia and Atletico Terranova in the Promozione league -- the sixth tier of the Italian league system -- which ended with two red cards and a goal in stoppage time. "What's this country where 300 young referees end up in casualty because you think they badly refereed your son's match," said Salvini.

Italy's Serie B will continue with just 19 clubs until at least Nov. 15 after a decision over reintegrating three clubs was once again put back. The regional administrative tribunal of Lazio (TAR) last week ruled that the Italian FA were wrong to reduce the league from 22 clubs in the summer after Avellino, Bari and Cesena all went bankrupt. In previous years, any club unable to obtain a licence would have been replaced either by reinstating a team who would otherwise have been relegated or promoting an additional club, with several criteria considered as part of the process. Catania, Novara, Pro Vercelli, Siena, Virtus Entella and Ternana all felt they should have been awarded a place in Serie

ROME (AP) - FIFA president Gianni Infantino labeled the chaos in Italy’s lower divisions an “absurdity.” And it’s hard to argue with him. Two months into the season, several clubs still don’t know which division they will be playing in and some teams have hardly played at all. The disorder is highlighting the failure of Italy’s complicated sports justice system. On Wednesday, a regional appeals court overturned an Italian soccer federation decision from August that had reduced Serie B from 22 to 19 clubs. The earlier decision by the federation’s emergency commissioner Roberto Fabbricini was made following the bankruptcies of Avellino, Bari and Cesena. Virtus Entella, Novara, Pro Vercelli and

Veteran former Real Madrid and AC Milan forward Antonio Cassano on Saturday announced his retirement for the third time just days after the ex-Italian international returned to training. "The day has come, the day when you decide it really is over," said Cassano, who had returned to training with Serie C side Virtus Entella last Monday. "Over the last few days of training, I realised that I no longer have the mentality to train consistently," said Cassano, whose last competitive match was for Sampdoria in May 2016. The 36-year-old Cassano -- who played for Roma, Real Madrid and both Milan clubs during his career -- had first announced he was retiring just a week after signing for Hellas Verona in July 2017.
