While the Woolsey Fire burning in Southern California has been 98 percent contained as of Tuesday night, it's left a huge mark on the landscape. According to the state's fire services, the wildfire has burned almost 97,000 acres, an area so vast you can see it from space. SEE ALSO: Before and after photos show the devastation of the California wildfires NASA shared an image of the "burn scar" taken on Nov. 18 using the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) that sits on on the space agency’s Terra satellite. Burned vegetation in the area appears brown, while green indicates unburned vegetation. Buildings and roads are light gray and white. According to NASA, the colors have been altered to look more natural. Read more...More about Nasa, Natural Disaster, California Wildfires, Nasa Earth Observatory, and Woolsey Fire

Sunday on CBS’s’ “Face the Nation,” Gov. Jerry Brown (D) said the increasing wildfires in California meant that “in less than five years” the “worst skeptics” were going to be believers in climate change. On the California fires, Brown said, “Well, how they started is now the subject of investigation. The consultation occurs because the brush, the vegetation is so dry, and the humidity is so low. And when you have that and then the heat and years of drought, that gets it going. In paradise, there were a lot of buildings that also caught fire, and it just went from one to the other. So it’s a mixture of many things, and the president talked about how our forests are managed. That’s an element. But there is also the way the houses were built, the materials, what kind of vegetation is around, and then there’s also the changing climate and the increasing drought and the lowered humidity and water vapor. All of that is...

An Inflection Point conversation with Dr. Safiya Noble, author of “Algorithms of Oppression” I know I am not alone when I say I think of Google as my second brain. It’s there when I want to remember something trivial, like that actor’s name in that movie or the title of that song stuck in my head. It’s there when I’m doing research on a guest or when I’m talking with my production team about an author or a recent article I read.Need the answer to a question? Just google it. Considering that Google processes 40,000 search queries every second, which translates to 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide — I googled to get that stat, by the way — it’s safe to say that nearly everyone with an internet connection or a smartphone has adopted search engines as their backup brain.Empowering, right? But what if using this backup brain is backfiring on us? What if the tools we use to retrieve mundane pieces of information are instead delivering oppressive ideas and hate...

As air quality hits hazardous levels in the Bay Area, scientists say we’re descending into unknown territory Last Thursday, many of the 7 million people living in the San Francisco Bay Area woke up to the bonfire-like smell of a forest fire. The smoke from the state’s deadliest fire traveled 160 miles south from Butte Country, where the “Camp Fire” started, and has hovered over the Bay Area since. Friday will mark the eighth consecutive day residents have been inhaling smoky air and living in a environment that appears eerily apocalyptic with no definitive end in sight. Public health officials have warned residents about the short-term effects of being exposed to an unhealthy air caused by wildfire smoke. Children and older adults who are more vulnerable are told to stay inside, those with asthma and lung-related diseases can be more susceptible to attacks and death. Fortunately, Brent Andrew, the Chief Communications Officer of Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospita...

A search for victims of a catastrophic blaze that reduced a northern California town to ashes intensified on Thursday, as authorities expanded to 630 the number of those reported missing in the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in state history. At least 63 people have been confirmed dead in the Camp Fire, which erupted a week ago in the drought-parched Sierra foothills 175 miles north of San Francisco and now ranks as one of the most lethal single US wildfires since the turn of the last century. Authorities attributed the high death toll in part to the staggering speed with which the wind-driven flames, fueled by desiccated scrub and trees, raced with little warning through Paradise, a town of 27,000. Nearly 12,000 homes and buildings, including most of the town, were incinerated last Thursday night hours after the blaze erupted, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) has said. What was left was a ghostly, smoky expanse of empty lots covered in...
