The Florida Department of Transportation is still not giving a straight story about the FIU bridge collapse that killed six people. After March's tragic collapse of a pedestrian bridge at Florida International University that killed six people and injured nine others, and subsequent federal fines of contractors over "serious" safety violations, Gov. Rick Scott's administration was quick to absolve itself of blame.According to the governor's office, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) played no role in approving the bridge other than issuing traffic permits, and furthermore the engineer who could have inspected the bridge was out of the office at the time the contractors left him a message about the giant cracks that were forming in the structure. This story in and of itself would suggest a failure of communication at FDOT. But according to the Miami Herald, the whole story might be a lie:In fact, the FDOT engineer, Thomas Andres, was present in the office on March 15,...

Over the course of one year, an average of 10 million women and men are physically abused by an intimate partner in the U.S.  Domestic violence can take the form of physical, psychological, or economic abuse, and it is a national issue that affects people of all ages and genders, though the majority of victims are women. Survivors do not report abuse for many reasons, including fear of gaslighting. Despite years of progress, domestic violence remains a silent epidemic.  "The first step in supporting survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and all forms of violence and discrimination, is to listen to them and believe them," said Ted Bunch, co-founder and chief development officer of A Call To Men, a violence prevention organization that teaches men and boys to redefine masculinity.  Read more...More about Domestic Violence, Violence Against Women, Survivors, Social Good, and Politics

Republican Mike Dunleavy was coasting to certain victory in a three-way race with independent Gov. Bill Walker and former Sen. Mark Begich. Now, things get interesting. On Friday, Alaska Gov. Bill Walker announced at the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention that he was suspending his re-election campaign, and endorsing former Democratic Sen. Mark Begich against Republican state Sen. Mike Dunleavy."In the time remaining, it has become clear we cannot win a three-way race," said Walker, at the start of a scheduled candidate forum, to enthusiastic applause. "The decision was made that at this point, Begich has the better odds. Alaskans deserve a competitive race and Alaskans deserve a choice other than Mike Dunleavy."Walker, a former Republican turned independent, was elected in 2014. This year, the race was split three ways after Begich, who lost his Senate re-election bid to Dan Sullivan the same year Walker was elected, threw his hat into the ring, with Dunleavy running as a c...

Andrew Kaczynski reported on Rep. Jason Lewis' prior comments as a talk radio host. Lewis' former broadcaster is now threatening to sue CNN. This week, a new report from Andrew Kaczynski of CNN's KFile revealed yet another round of shocking comments made by Rep. Jason Lewis (R-MN) during his days as a right-wing talk radio host. In the clips, from a show in November 2011, Lewis mocked women who feel traumatized by sexual harassment in the workplace."I don't want to be callous here, but how traumatizing was it?" said Lewis, his voice breaking at times into a mocking pitch. "How many women at some point in their life have a man come on to them, place their hand on their shoulder or maybe even their thigh, kiss them, and they would rather not have it happen, but is that really something that's going to be seared in your memory that you'll need therapy for? You'll never get over? It was the most traumatizing experience? Come on! She wasn't raped." He also argued that sexual...

Josh Hawley is suing to end the ACA while saying he supports its provisions. Sen. Claire McCaskill is having none of it. Missouri attorney general Josh Hawley, the GOP challenger to Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, is engaged in a bizarre two-step on health care. On one hand, he is part of a multi-state lawsuit urging federal courts to nullify the Affordable Care Act's protections for pre-existing conditions. On the other hand, he is running ads about how urgently he wants to protect coverage for pre-existing conditions. On Thursday, at a debate in St. Louis, McCaskill called out Hawley for trying to have it both ways."We need to fix the problems in Obamacare, not throw it out," McCaskill said. "And his lawsuit is so reckless, because there's no backup here. There's no backup plan for pre-existing conditions if he's successful. If he believes we should protect pre-existing conditions, he should ask tomorrow for the case to be dismissed."Watch below:Claire McCaskill is brilliant a...

Florida's governor and GOP Senate candidate could be facing his own scandal over sexual misconduct. On Thursday, POLITICO delved into a pending lawsuit against the state of Florida by Lucille Alford, a 64-year-old former state disability examiner who claims she was sexually harassed in 2014 — and Gov. Rick Scott did nothing about it.Alford, who filed her suit in April of last year, alleges that her boss, Charles Fete, held her in a "bear hug" in his office and whispered innuendo in her ear as she struggled to free herself. She reported the incident to another supervisor, local law enforcement, the Florida Commission on Human Relations, and Scott's office, and the matter was not pursued because she did not offer eyewitnesses to the incident. The suit is scheduled to be heard in February in Leon County court. This week, Alford spoke out publicly about the incident for the first time, speaking with POLITICO reporters. "I tried to get the governor's attention," she said. "I fel...

Trump is in love with dictators; their “enemies of the people” are his enemies too. There is a long tradition in American politics of presidents copying from the speeches of others, stealing their ideas, recycling their rhetoric. Think of Kennedy’s famed cri de coeur in his inaugural address: “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country,” taken from Khalil Gibran’s book “The New Frontier,” published 36 years before Kennedy took office. Gibran wrote, “Are you a politician asking what your country can do for you, or a zealous one asking what you can do for your country?”Ronald Reagan’s “shining city on a hill,” was taken from John Winthrop’s address in 1630 just before the first group of Massachusetts Bay colonists set sail from Southampton, England to establish a colony in the new world that became the city of Boston. He charged his fellow Puritans "that we shall be as a city upon a hill — the eyes of all people are...

Nicole Kidman has said being married to Tom Cruise gave her "protection" from sexual harassment in Hollywood. The Australian actress married Cruise in 1990, when she was 22, after they starred together in Days Of Thunder. In an essay for New York Magazine Kidman, now 51, said the marriage, which lasted a decade, meant she avoided becoming a victim of harassment. She wrote: "I got married very young, but it definitely wasn't power for me - it was protection. I married for love, but being married to an extremely powerful man kept me from being sexually harassed." Hollywood has been engulfed by claims of sexual harassment, with several high-profile actresses coming forward to say they had been attacked and the #MeToo movement rising to prominence. Kidman added: "Of course I've had #MeToo moments - since I was little! But do I want to expose them in an article? No. Do they come out in my work? Absolutely." Ramani was not immediately reachable for comment. The lawsuit comes amid widespread calls on social media for Akbar's resignation from his post as the minister of state for external affairs.
