The selection process for the World Golf Hall of Fame is not based solely on a player’s on-course success, says the body’s chief executive in the wake of  criticism that some of the game’s most successful players have yet to be inducted. “The Fame element is part of it. Two-time US Open winner Retief Goosen, three-time major champion Jan Stephenson and former Augusta National chairman Billy Payne were among five new World Golf Hall of Fame members announced Wednesday. Disabled golfer Dennis Walters and the late Peggy Kirk Bell, an LPGA charter member, will also be enshrined in ceremonies on June 10 at Pebble Beach ahead of next year's US Open, raising total membership in the Hall to 160. South Africa's Goosen won the 2001 and 2004 US Opens among 33 global titles in his career.

A 16-member panel of mostly golf administrators also selected retired Augusta National chairman Billy Payne, LPGA charter member and renowned teacher Peggy Kirk Bell and Dennis Walters, who has been inspiring golfers through clinics despite being paralyzed from the chest down since he was 24. Goosen recovered from a lightning strike to win 33 times worldwide, including U.S. Opens at Southern Hills and Shinnecock Hills.
