This is real life, not The Social Network.  These days, having coding chops is a highly marketable skill, and anyone who knows how to program has the potential to take their career to new heights. If you want to enter the tech space but are confused about where to start, or which language you should learn first, here are five online courses that will help you learn some of the most in-demand programming languages today. Fully self-driving cars may be on the fast lane to U.S. roads under a pilot programme the Trump administration said on Tuesday it was considering, which would allow real-world road testing for a limited number of the vehicles. Self-driving cars used in the program would potentially need to have technology disabling the vehicle if a sensor fails or barring vehicles from travelling above safe speeds, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in a document made public Tuesday. NHTSA said it was considering whether it would have to be notified of any accident within 24 hours and was seeking public input on what other data should be disclosed including near misses.

Jose Mourinho has suggested Manchester United’s players lost their “dignity” in Saturday’s shambolic defeat at West Ham. Having already questioned how much some players care about United’s troubled plight on the eve of the Champions League tie against Valencia at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, Mourinho used his programme notes ahead of the game to launch another pointed attack on his squad.

The heroic age of text adventure games was dominated by Zork and Zorkalikes, many from the games studio Infocom; the text adventures' fortunes sagged when improvements in computer graphics lowered the average gamer's age, and then rose again when BBSes carved new spaces for text-based play. The legacy of those games is the "interactive fiction" artform, which is largely practiced by programming in "Inform," a highly idiosyncratic programming language whose principal maintainer, Graham Nelson, is a deep thinker on the intersection of computing and art, and whose delightful essay (the transcript of a speech) on the history of Inform is an utterly captivating meditation on the way that code can be literature, and the role that artistic and technical choices have in the literary form of software. One important characteristic of Inform is its ability to tolerate ambiguity in the categories it relies on: the edge-cases and corner-cases in seemingly obvious categories can quickly grow to...

Solid objects turn out to be mostly made of empty space and whirling particles, but we act as though they're solid, because we rarely have to interact with them in such a granular way that involves their underlying complexity. In the same way, solid iron-clad concepts turn out to be riddled with exceptions that we generally ignore because they're easy to deal with on a case-by-case basis. But when a programmer has to create a system that everyone can use, suddenly these "edge cases" grow to devour the project. For example: human names are (really) weird. Building a system that can accept all the names people have is really hard. There's actually a giant list of human concepts that are hard to capture in software design. A worthy addition to that list: Dave Delong's Calendrical Fallacies, AKA lies programmers believe about dates. An hour will never occur twice in a single day False. On days when we “leap back” for the Daylight Saving Time shift, one hour occurs twice. For...
