Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja had a tough act to follow in singing the national anthem at the MLS Cup over the weekend ― herself. The 7-year-old wowed the world back in September, when she belted out a viral “Star-Spangled Banner” at an LA Galaxy soccer match. “My biggest dream is to sing at the Super Bowl,” Malea Emma told USA Today.

A teacher in Visalia, California, "forcibly cut a student's hair off" while singing the national anthem of the United States of America. College of the Sequoias police responded Wednesday to a University Preparatory High School classroom after reports of child endangerment involving a teacher and a "pair of scissors," said Police Chief Kevin Mizner. Science teacher Margaret Gieszinger, 52, of Exeter, was later arrested on suspicion of felony child endangerment. Her bail was set at $100,000. The arrest followed two videos posted to social media on Wednesday showing a student sitting in a chair at the front of the classroom as the teacher cuts off portions of the student's hair. She then tosses the chunks of hair behind her. The video must be seen to be believed: a found-footage horror movie depicting her lurching, scissors whirling, at screaming children. She was arrested on suspicion of corporal injury to a child. There's more coverage here, with a different cut of the footage. Rea...

The possibility of bringing in Colin Kaepernick for a tryout was ''discussed'' by the quarterback-needy Washington Redskins, according to coach Jay Gruden, who said Tuesday the team made a ''strictly football'' decision to look elsewhere. ''Isn't it obvious what the real reason is?'' Kaepernick's lawyer, Mark Geragos, wrote in an email to The Associated Press. Kaepernick, who led the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance, hasn't played since the 2016 season, when he began kneeling during the national anthem as a way to protest police brutality and social and racial injustice.

More than 65 people were injured and almost 170 people arrested in central Paris on Saturday after violent clashes between police and "yellow vest" protesters, in a third weekend of nationwide demonstrations against high living costs. Police fired tear gas, stun grenades and water cannon in battles with protesters around the Arc de Triomphe near the Champs-Elysees avenue and clashes were reported elsewhere across the city centre as well as in other towns across the country. Police said they had arrested 169 people and some are concerned that violent far-right and far-left groups were infiltrating the "gilets jaunes" (yellow vests) movement, a spontaneous grassroots rebellion against the struggle many French face to make ends meet. For three weeks, protesters have blocked roads across France, posing one of the largest and most sustained challenges Emmanuel Macron has faced in his 18-month-old presidency. Thousands of anti-government protesters are expected today on...

High schools in the United States have made a series of controversial decision regarding the free speech of their students — giving a Nazi salute won’t lead to a suspension in Wisconsin, but kneeling during the national anthem will lead to one in Louisiana. This week, a Wisconsin high school at the center of a national controversy decided that male students who appeared to give a Nazi salute in a junior prom photo will not be punished for it. As Newsweek reported, the picture showed close to 60 boys from Baraboo High School raising their arm in an apparent Nazi salute.

Hundreds of Tijuana residents congregated around a monument in an affluent section of the city south of California on Sunday to protest the thousands of Central American migrants who have arrived via caravan in hopes of a new life in the US. Tensions have built as nearly 3,000 migrants from the caravan poured into Tijuana in recent days after more than a month on the road, and with many more months ahead of them while they seek asylum. The federal government estimates the number of migrants could soon swell to 10,000. US border inspectors are processing only about 100 asylum claims a day at Tijuana's main crossing to San Diego. Asylum seekers register their names in a tattered notebook managed by migrants themselves that had more than 3,000 names even before the caravan arrived. On Sunday, displeased Tijuana residents waved Mexican flags, sang the Mexican national anthem and chanted "Out! Out!" in front of a statue of the Aztec ruler Cuauhtemoc, 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) f...
