Scotland deserve to be "super confident" of securing Nations League promotion following their crushing 4-0 victory over Albania, according to manager Alex McLeish. James Forrest's double and one apiece from Ryan Fraser and Steven Fletcher secured a morale-boosting away result on Saturday. Mergim Mavraj's first-half dismissal for headbutting Ryan Christie swung all the initiative away from Albania and the visitors went on to secure the largest winning margin of either of McLeish's two spells in charge.

GK: Jon McLaughlin Despite Robbin Ruiter getting the nod for the Checkatrade Trophy game with Morecambe on Tuesday, there can be no doubts that Jon McLaughlin will regain his place in the side for this afternoon. Special measures were taken by the club in order to recall the former Hearts stopper from international duty with Scotland, an agreement which Jack Ross made with Alex McLeish in order to give us the best possible chance of picking our strongest side. Ruiter looked rusty on Tuesday, though he did make one important stop later in the game, and it’s understandable since he’s not played a great deal of football so far this season. Having kept four straight league clean sheets, McLaughlin

The question of who should play at left-back for Scotland has been the subject of much argument as Andrew Robertson of Liverpool and Celtic’s Kieran Tierney vie for the position. According to Peter Grant, however, the matter is a non-issue and the heat can be taken out of the debate using one piece of technology. The Scotland assistant coach was speaking ahead of the Nations League double-header against Albania in Shkoder and Israel at Hampden Park as, once again, Alex McLeish will attempt to accommodate both players with the least  disruption.

Newcastle winger Matt Ritchie has become the latest Scotland player to ask to be excluded from international duty "for the forseeable future". Ritchie, who has started Newcastle's last seven games, turned down a request to be in the squad for Nations League games against Albania and Israel. "I wanted Matt to come in, but he has asked to be left out at the moment," said head coach Alex McLeish. He added Ritchie's reasons were "private" but "he has not retired". "It is not something for me to discuss," McLeish said. "He had injury issues as well, and again, there is management of his injuries. "You don't know everyone's private life so you have to respect that." McLeish is already without Crystal

Stephen Dobbie thinks it is unrealistic to expect a "dream" Scotland call-up despite the veteran striker remaining Europe's top marksman this season. Dobbie has scored 24 times in 16 appearances for Queen of the South. And it has led to a clamour on social media from fans urging Alex McLeish to hand the 35-year-old a first cap. "For Alex McLeish to bring someone in from the Championship would maybe not be the best option - especially at my age," Dobbie told Sportsound. BBC Scotland last month highlighted statistics showing that Dobbie had a strike rate better than Paris St-Germain's Kylian Mbappe, Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski, Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Chelsea's Eden Hazard. In a little over a month's time, Scotland's fate in the Uefa Nations League will be decided. Or perhaps not. This intricate international extravaganza has plenty nuances, but at least the picture will become a little clearer for Alex McLeish and his side, and their ultimate goal of reaching Euro 2020. With three points from their opening two Group C1 matches, here's how things stand for Scotland. Alex McLeish is in a world of hurt as manager of Scotland as they fell at home to Portugal 3-1 after a host of missed opportunities and defensive errors. The visitors were at less than full strength, without Cristiano Ronaldo and Bernardo Silva. Scotland started the game in Hampden brightly and nearly had the opener as Beto was forced to make a save on his own man Sergio Oliveira. Portugal found its way into the game and missed a few chances before they bagged the first just before halftime as Wolverhampton winger Helder Costa beat Andrew Robertson to the far post where he cut inside and met Kévin Rodrigues’ cross for a sliding finish. The hosts had chances, as Scott McKenna missed a header after

In-form James Forrest makes it into Scotland's starting XI, but Celtic team-mate Kieran Tierney doesn't for Thursday's match against Israel. We don't yet know whether that will be Alex McLeish's choice. This is the team based on 14,000 respondents to BBC Scotland's squad selector. The Scotland head coach has admitted that Forrest's four goals against St Johnstone could force a rethink. "We can mix up the system," he said ahead of the Nations League game. McLeish has favoured a 3-5-2 system since taking over from Gordon Strachan and Forrest was on the bench for the opening group win over Albania. "I didn't say he wouldn't fit my system as he has played wing-back for Celtic - but I don't think

Scotland coach Peter Grant insists there's "no issue" between manager Alex McLeish and Leigh Griffiths after the striker pulled out of his latest squad. Griffiths withdrew from the squad, preparing to face Israel and Portugal, saying "I need to focus on my fitness." He described being dropped to the bench against Albania last month as a "kick in the teeth". But, says, Grant: "He's definitely not in the huff. There's 100% not an issue. "He's just being honest." Griffiths, who has scored four international goals in 19 appearances, started Celtic's 6-0 thrashing of St Johnstone on Sunday but was replaced with Scott Sinclair 61 minutes into the Scottish Premiership game in Perth. Goalkeeper: Jon McLaughlin Jon McLaughlin’s performances for Sunderland have not gone unnoticed north of the border as Alex McLeish has recalled the goalkeeper to the national side for Scotland’s upcoming international fixtures. McLaughlin is yet to build on the clean sheet won against Scunthorpe, but the stopper has rarely been at fault as an individual recently. Jack Ross will be pleased that his number one has received recognition for his decent form and will hope that spurs him on this evening. In a game Sunderland can ill-afford to lose, having your goalkeeper striving for another shut-out certainly won’t hurt. Here’s hoping McLaughlin can achieve that target tonight. Defence: Flanagan,
