Charl Schwartzel sank a 75-yard eagle on his penultimate hole to card a second round eight under par 63 for the lead at the halfway point of the European Tour's South African Open at the Randpark Golf Club on Friday. Schwartzel's 12 under par tournament total is one ahead of Zambian Madalitso Muthiya, who followed up his opening round 63 with a 68 on the tougher Firethorn Course. With a massive 240 player field, the first two rounds are split between Firethorn and the shorter Bushwillow course which Schwartzel tackled in his second round. Overnight leader Louis Oosthuizen managed nine birdies in his 62 on Thursday, but found the going much tougher on Firethorn with a 70 leaving him on 10 under par, tied for third with last weekend's Mauritius Open winner, American Kurt Kitayama (69), and South African Zander Lombard (68).

Home favorite Louis Oosthuizen wielded a red-hot putter to bag six birdies on his back nine and card an opening round 62 for a one-shot lead at the European Tour's South African Open on Thursday. Oosthuizen’s faultless round included nine birdies and he leads from Zambian Madalitso Muthiya and last weekend’s winner at the Mauritius Open, American Kurt Kitayama, who both carded eight-under-par rounds of 63. Oosthuizen and Muthiya played on the shorter Bushwillow Course at the Randpark Golf Club, which saw most of the low scoring on Thursday, while Kitayama teed off on the more formidable Firethorn Course to put himself into an excellent position.

Badminton's world body has banned for life and fined Mauritian former council member Raj Gaya after a hearing over alleged misuse of funds, including money intended for an Olympic athlete. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) said in a statement on Wednesday that Gaya had been fined $50,000 by its ethics hearing panel following an investigation that started in June last year. The charges against Gaya stated that grants or funding intended for the Mauritius Badminton Association (MBA) had been diverted into personal bank accounts and used "for his own benefit".

What it must be like to hit a perfect drive even when you get distracted mid-swing. S. Chikkarangappa was teeing off at the par-4 16th during the third round of the European Tour’s Afrasia Bank Mauritius Open when a disturbance popped up mid-swing. Right away it was clear: A phone had gone off. A loud one, too. That’s a brutal disturbance during a swing, and Chikkarangappa understandably acted upset. At the end of his follow through, he tossed his club and glared in the direction of the offending spectator. And yet, somehow his drive ended up absolutely perfect… Phones going off during tournament play is not OK, and Chikkarangappa’s reaction was totally justified. But it’s also a hilarious one

Kurt Kitayama carded a second consecutive seven-under 65 to open a two-shot lead at the Mauritius Open. The American began round two one stroke off the front, but nine birdies and just one ugly double bogey at the second – the only dropped shots he has on his card this week – made him the outright leader at 14 under. Overnight co-leaders Chikkarangappa S and Victor Perez are two and three shots off the pace respectively, the former hitting a four-under 68 that included a run of five straight birdies between the first and fifth holes – his 10th 14th of the day, having started on the back nine.
