Jon McLaughlin

GK: Jon McLaughlin Despite Robbin Ruiter getting the nod for the Checkatrade Trophy game with Morecambe on Tuesday, there can be no doubts that Jon McLaughlin will regain his place in the side for this afternoon. Special measures were taken by the club in order to recall the former Hearts stopper from international duty with Scotland, an agreement which Jack Ross made with Alex McLeish in order to give us the best possible chance of picking our strongest side. Ruiter looked rusty on Tuesday, though he did make one important stop later in the game, and it’s understandable since he’s not played a great deal of football so far this season. Having kept four straight league clean sheets, McLaughlin

Ruiter unlikely to stake claim as first-choice keeper Despite the fact that Jon McLaughlin has been in fine form, Robbin Ruiter will have seen this evening’s game as a chance to demonstrate his worth to Jack Ross as he perhaps looks for a new deal on Wearside, or a move elsewhere. It would have taken a magnificent performance for Ruiter to have ousted McLaughlin from between the sticks; however, after the victory over Morecambe, it’s clear to see that Ruiter will remain as Jack Ross’ second choice. Ruiter wasn’t horrific by any means, but he did struggle aerially at times, and also spilled what should have been a couple of rudimentary saves. It’s clear to see how valuable McLaughlin is to our

Jack Ross has the opportunity this evening to tinker with his squad and offer a number of rising Academy stars and those on the fringe of the first team the chance to impress as Sunderland travel to Morecambe for the latest round of Checkatrade Trophy games. Robbin Ruiter has performed well in this season’s competition and is a far more confident version than the keeper fans saw in the Championship last season. Much credit will go to Ross’ backroom staff, particularly the now-departed goalkeeper coach Jimmy Walker, for returning the Dutchman to the sort of form that prompted Simon Grayson to sign the stopper in 2017. With Jon McLaughlin available for the league game against Wycombe this weekend, tonight’s game will give Ruiter another opportunity to convince Ross that he is worthy of a new contract.

A week’s break has possibly come at a welcome time for the Lads. Saturday’s match against Blackpool at the Stadium of Light was postponed after three of Jack Ross’ men were called up for international duty (Jon McLaughlin to Scotland, Tom Flanagan to Northern Ireland and Bryan Oviedo to Costa Rica) - this lead to a successful appeal from Sunderland to have the game called off. Supporters of the club will argue that it is a welcome break for the Lads but some will compete that it is a bad time to have a week off. With all of the injuries that the boss has, it is a good time for a week off schedule as it can give them more time to work on bringing them back to full strength heading into a busy

Important first-team fixtures like Jon McLaughlin and Tom Flanagan have been called up for international duty, and then there’s the whole host of injuries we’ve picked up that Jack Ross would have had to contend with. With a weaker squad, we were certain to go into this game with more than a handful of selection headaches - and that could have had an impact on the result, particularly in a game against a team in Blackpool that have only lost once so far this season (and that was in their second league game, away at fellow promotion hopefuls Portsmouth). Since the game was called off, we’ve picked up a draw against Peterborough, a win at Bradford and a victory in the Checkatrade Trophy over Carlisle United.

Jon McLaughlin was Sunderland’s hero again saving his second penalty in Mackem colours to secure a vital triumph at Valley Parade. Max Power’s 66th minute red-card for violent conduct gave Jack Payne the opportunity to pull Bradford level, but McLaughlin guessed right and parried his effort away, Tom Flanagan then made a goal-saving challenge as Sunderland held on. Josh Maja’s ninth goal of the season sent Sunderland on their way to victory, but Anthony O’Connor leveled just after half-time, Jack Baldwin put Sunderland back ahead two minutes later. That was enough to win it for the Black Cats who vault up to third in League One on a day where all three of the top three at the start of play lost.

Goalkeeper: Jon McLaughlin Jon McLaughlin’s performances for Sunderland have not gone unnoticed north of the border as Alex McLeish has recalled the goalkeeper to the national side for Scotland’s upcoming international fixtures. McLaughlin is yet to build on the clean sheet won against Scunthorpe, but the stopper has rarely been at fault as an individual recently. Jack Ross will be pleased that his number one has received recognition for his decent form and will hope that spurs him on this evening. In a game Sunderland can ill-afford to lose, having your goalkeeper striving for another shut-out certainly won’t hurt. Here’s hoping McLaughlin can achieve that target tonight. Defence: Flanagan,
