In the faraway realms at the bottom of the Earth, Antarctic scientists have unexpectedly recorded bizarre drone-like sounds. After burying 34 seismic monitors in the snow atop the Ross Ice Shelf in 2014 — which is a massive Texas-sized slab of ice that floats over the Southern Ocean — the instruments picked up near-constant "buzzing" noises.  While normally inaudible to the human ear, the researchers have made these ultra-low frequencies detectable to our limited hearing range. They posted the eerie sounds online, along with a Geophysical Research Letters report on their greater research. "If this vibration were audible, it would be analogous to the buzz produced by thousands of cicada bugs when they overrun the tree canopy and grasses in late summer," Douglas MacAyeal, a glaciologist at the University of Chicago who had no role in the research, wrote in a commentary. But their trip to Yerevan brought some history, some national pride and some pain. Let's recap: before the match, the stadium in Armenia played the Liechtenstein national anthem instead of Gibraltar's, prompting Gibraltar's official Twitter account to voice its displeasure at the perceived slight. The Serie A giants are reported to have agreed a 35 million euro ($40.4 million) deal with Flamengo - the club Paqueta joined as a ten-year-old - in what would be the most expensive signing of a Brazilian player by an Italian club. The 21-year-old completed his medical in Rio on Wednesday, and should arrive in Milan in January. "We have a basic agreement with Flamengo, but the market doesn't re-open until January so there's still a little bit to go before it's official," Brazilian Leonardo told journalists after receiving the Liedholm Award, an Italian prize which honours those who embody the values of sport.

The growing popularity of electronic borrowing has had an enormous impact on how much revenue is collected via overdue fines. For Plano residents, that mad dash to their library’s book drop will soon be a thing of the past. As of this month, the City of Plano is getting rid of overdue fines for materials borrowed from its public library. Residents are still responsible for replacing lost and damaged items. However, if they’ve accidentally left a picture book at grandma’s house in Oklahoma, their library account will simply be frozen until that item is returned or replaced within 30 days. Plano is not the first city in in the DFW Metroplex to rethink overdue fines. It is simply the latest. Frisco, McKinney and Irving have likewise taken up this policy change. Furthermore, Plano won’t be the last city to get rid of overdue fines: More cities and towns across Texas are likely to adopt similar changes in the coming years. The growing popularity of electronic borrowing h...
