A reminder of how broken and dysfunctional America’s voting systems are. It did not take long on Election Day to have reports of problems with voting in several states. Early morning voters were turned away due to missing voting machines in one Detroit precinct. The machines were ultimately located, but with no guarantee those voters will have the chance to return and vote.Voters arrived to an Indiana polling place and found that voting machines weren't plugged in and there was only one volunteer to administer the voting. In Arizona, “Three polling places are currently down, incl in the Gila Precinct in Chandler. The building was foreclosed overnight.”Three Gwinnett County, Georgia, precincts had technical problems that forced the use of paper ballots and led to hundreds of voters stuck in line.Elsewhere in the Atlanta area, “Hundreds of voters stand in line for hours this morning at this SW Atlanta polling place. Only three voting machines!”Some New York City pr...

Brian Kemp is also the Georgia Secretary of State. In Georgia, Republican Brian Kemp—who is in a close gubernatorial race against Democrat Stacey Abrams—has come under fire for his efforts to suppress non-white voters. And in a leaked audio that Rolling Stone has obtained, Kemp (who is Georgia’s secretary of state) can be heard saying that he fears losing the election “if everybody uses and exercises their right to vote.”In recent polls from WXIA-TV/Survey USA and the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Kemp was leading Abrams by only 2%—which is a statistical dead heat. And in the recording that Rolling Stone obtained, Kemp expressed his fear that Abrams could win thanks to “the literally tens of millions of dollars that” her campaign is “putting behind the get-out-the-vote effort to their base.”Kemp, in the audio, is also heard expressing his concerns that absentee ballots could favor Abrams. Kemp laments, “They have just an unprecedented number of (absentee bal...

Arizona and Georgia are leading examples. As early voting has begun across America and seen record turnouts, the big question is: Will people voting for Democrats surmount the obstacles that the GOP has built in red-run states to achieve winning popular vote majorities? Those obstacles began with extreme gerrymanders in 2011 for state legislative and U.S. House districts. They continued with newly crafted red super-majorities passing strict voter ID laws. And now, in the finale to 2018’s midterms, a new tactic is emerging that can be described as data suppression. In short, in a handful of red-run states with change-making races, voter information that would normally add people to registration rolls is not being readily processed. That scenario creates a likely prospect of Election Day ambushes, starting with surprised people whose names are not in poll books, and then rippling outward as they fill out provisional ballots while others are delayed in line.Versions of this voter da...
