Over their six years in Congress, what have Cruz and O'Rourke gotten done? Since launching his bid for U.S. Senate last year, U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke has painted Republican incumbent Ted Cruz asa senator whose national ambitions havedistracted him from his Texas duties. Cruz has questioned what accomplishments the congressman from El Paso has to his name. How exactly do the two men's records stack up? Their legislative achievements are easy to compare, given that both men entered Congress on the same day – Jan. 3, 2013.They both joined chambers out of their party’s control. Two years later, the Republicans regained control of the Senate, while the Democrats maintained their minority status in the House – as would be the case for all of O’Rourke’s three terms.Since the pair entered Congress, Cruz has introduced 105 bills, compared to the 65 bills O'Rourke has introduced over the same period, according to Congress.gov. The vast majority of those bills died in various...

Washington state Rep. Matt Shea has been linked to a document endorsing fundamentalist holy war and the killing of unbelievers. A Republican state representative in Washington, Matt Shea, is under fire for a four-page manifesto he distributed titled "Biblical Basis for War" that was posted online on Tuesday.According to the Spokesman-Review, Shea took credit and defended himself against critics in a Facebook Live video, saying that it was just "a summary of a series of sermons on biblical war in the Old Testament" that his critics had taken out of context. He also said that America is a "Christian nation" — something that has been repeatedly debunked by reputable scholars and by the writings of the founding fathers — and that people offended by his views are part of a "Maoist insurgency" and a "counter state" of "Marxists" and "Islamists"."Biblical Basis for War" contains a chilling theocratic call to arms, advocating the imposition of Biblical law against enemies and the mas...

Thailand’s elite was mourning one of its own on Monday as Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, Leicester City's owner and the Southeast Asian country’s seventh richest man, was confirmed to have died in a helicopter crash.  Mr Srivaddhanaprabha, 60, was a high-profile figure in Thailand’s sporting, business and political circles, after emerging from relative obscurity to win access to the exclusive club of well-connected Bangkok-based oligarchs who managed to amass their fortunes despite years of coups and political turmoil.  Born into a Thai-Chinese family, he struck gold by tapping into the duty free business on the cusp of Thailand’s tourist boom.  The ambitious Leicester owner’s success was then sealed by gaining favour with the ruling classes of the day.  He was given his first big break by the government of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, shortly before they were ousted by a military coup in September 2006.  Mr Thaksin’s administration awarded Mr Srivaddhan...

Super Typhoon Yutu, a category five storm, struck the U.S. Western Pacific territory overnight on Wednesday, pulling down hundreds of electricity poles, damaging homes and commercial properties and the international airport on Saipan, located about 6,000 km (3,700 miles) west of Hawaii. On the island of Tinian, which took a direct hit from Yutu, the mayor asked for tools, machetes and chainsaws to help clear debris and urged residents to be patient and conserve fuel, food and water as emergency supplies had yet to arrive. "Please be calm, help is on its way," mayor Joey Patrick San Nicolas said in a Facebook Live video.

Usain Bolt has been training for some time to make a professional soccer debut. Finally he's done it, and in striking style. Playing in a friendly for Australian club Central Coast Mariners, Bolt started at forward and scored twice in Friday's 4-0 victory against Macarthur South West United. “It was brilliant,” Bolt said afterward. “It took a lot of weight off my shoulders. (It took) that first goal to relax you because I missed an earlier chance. It was a great feeling I was happy about it.” Already this year, the world's fastest man has trained with Norwegian club Stromsgodset, German club Borussia Dortmund and South African club Sundowns. When the steep-walled eye of Hurricane Michael passed over Stefan Melendez Wednesday afternoon, he stepped into the temporarily tranquil Florida environment and saw blue skies above. Melendez captured the footage during a Facebook Live video, soon after Category 4 Hurricane Michael — packing 155 mph winds — became the third-strongest cyclone to make landfall in U.S. history.  The storm is now the most powerful hurricane on record to strike the Florida Panhandle. Violent winds thrashed communities like Panama City and Marianna Florida, while surges of ocean water — pushed into the shore by winds — submerged coastal homes in Mexico Beach, Florida.
