NASA has ordered a review of workplace safety at SpaceX and Boeing, the two companies developing spaceships to ferry its astronauts to and from the International Space Station, in the wake of a video showing SpaceX CEO Elon Musk smoking pot and drinking whiskey on a YouTube talk show. The safety review, first reported by The Washington Post, could involve site inspections and hundreds of interviews. It’s not yet clear whether the review could hold up the first crewed demonstration flights of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon or Boeing’s Starliner capsule. Those flights are currently scheduled for June and August of 2019,… Read More

The US space agency has ordered a sweeping safety review of operations and workplace culture, including drug-free policies, at Boeing and SpaceX, two companies working to send astronauts to space, US media said Tuesday. The review was "prompted by the recent behavior of SpaceX's founder, Elon Musk, according to three officials with knowledge of the probe, after he took a hit of marijuana and sipped whiskey on a podcast streamed on the Internet," said the Washington Post, which first reported on the story. NASA declined to comment on the allegations, but confirmed the review would start next year as the agency focuses "on safe and successful commercial crew missions" to the International Space Station.

SpaceX's next and soon-to-be most powerful rocket officially has a new name.  The private spaceflight company's founder, Elon Musk, announced on Twitter late Monday night that SpaceX's BFR — short for Big Falcon Rocket or Big F*cking Rocket, depending on who you ask — is now going to be known as SpaceX's Starship.  It's an aspirational name for a rocket that hasn't yet flown, but Musk has high hopes for the future booster and ship. Technically, two parts: Starship is the spaceship/upper stage & Super Heavy is the rocket booster needed to escape Earth’s deep gravity well (not needed for other planets or moons) — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) November 20, 2018 Read more...
