They can't help themselves. At 29, Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who defeated Republican economics professor Anthony Pappas by a landslide in Queens and the Bronx in the 2018 midterms, is the youngest woman ever elected to the House of Representatives. Ocasio-Cortez has her critics, some of whom have trying to use her financial status to disparage her—and the native New Yorker hasn’t been shy about responding to them. One of the silly memes about Ocasio-Cortez is that she dresses too nicely for a “socialist” who addresses class inequality. On Twitter, reporter Eddie Scarry posted, “That jacket and coat don’t look like a girl who struggles.”But in a November 20 tweet, Ocasio-Cortez described some of her struggles in life, posting“My dad died when I was 18, my mom scrubbed toilets + drove school buses, I bartended to help her, and still won a Congressional primary at 28. Film theorist Laura Mulvey coined the term "male gaze" to describe the "masculine, heterosexual perspective that presents and represents women as sexual objects for the pleasure of the male viewer": in a paper for the Harvard Journal of Law and Gender, Southwestern Law School professor John Tehranian applies Mulvey's idea to the complex and often nonsensical way that copyright determines who is an "author" of a work and thus entitled to control it, and shows how the notion of authorship reflects and amplifies the power imbalances already present in the world. Copyright law presumes the existence of an "author" in whom copyright can be vested, but the concept of an author is complicated, especially as media have become more bound up in the cooperation of multiple parties (photographers and subjects, actors and directors, etc). The actual rules of copyright tend to follow industry practices: that is, the industry arrives at a certain way of doing things, and then there's a dispute,...

On Tuesday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “America’s Newsroom,” Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz agreed with a federal judge’s ruling blocking President Trump’s order requiring asylum seekers to enter the US legally through a port of entry. Dershowitz stated, “I think he has the better of the argument, the judge does, on the statutory interpretation. There’s nothing in the statute that suggests that the president has the authority to overrule Congress. … The president’s authority is not a constitutional authority. It’s limited by statute. If the statute permits asylum seekers to seek asylum, even if they come in illegally, that statutory rule has to prevail. If the president doesn’t like that rule, he should go to Congress and have Congress change it.” Follow Ian Hanchett on Twitter @IanHanchett

Beto was no fluke: Democrats ousted two GOP congressmen and picked up 14 seats in the Texas legislature Republicans in Texas are concerned that the previously reliably red state may become a swing state by the 2020 elections. While Democratic Rep. Beto O'Rourke fell just short in his campaign against Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, he came close enough that he now looks like a plausible presidential candidate. More important still, changing demographics caused Republicans to lose more than a dozen federal, state and local seats in Texas in this month's midterm elections.Republicans lost 12 seats in the state House and two in the state Senate in the midterms, primarily in areas around Dallas and Houston.  Voters in Houston’s Harris County also booted a Republican county executive. Republicans had won the straight-ticket vote in Harris County by nearly double-digits in 2010 and 2014, The Hill reported. This year, they lost by 11 points. In Dallas County, Democrats edged Republic...

“The hypocrisy of Ms. Trump." On Monday, it was revealed that Ivanka Trump had conducted government business over her personal email. Fake news is a massive problem on the right — as even GOP Sen. Mike Lee is apparently realizing.
