The myth is more entertaining in a way. It is hard to fly in the face of history. Even harder when you are dealing with historical icons. We like to believe in our historical myths and are loathe to rethink what we have believed most of our lives. Miss O’Learys cow probably did not really start the Chicago fire and Elliott Ness and the Untouchables were not the men who brought Al Capone to justice. And it wasn’t the Wright Brothers who cracked the code of human flight, but one brother, Wilbur Wright, who is the man primarily responsible for the fact we can get on a jetliner and fly into the heavens. When you read a biography of the Wright Brothers there is a standard format. First, they are adjoined as two brothers who act as one. They both became interested in a toy helicopter their father brought home when they were children. Then they both started a printing press, a bike shop, then they both became fascinated with solving the problem of human flight. They both went to K...

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Fire have re-signed Bastian Schweinsteiger as a designated player for 2019, keeping the German star for at least one more season. The team announced the deal on Wednesday. Schweinsteiger earned $6.1 million last season, according to the MLS players union. In a statement, Schweinsteiger insists Chicago can win a championship and says "let's raise a trophy." The 34-year-old midfielder has seven goals and 12 assists in 55 regular-season games over two seasons with the Fire. A World Cup champion with Germany in 2014, Schweinsteiger helped the Fire reach the playoffs after joining them in 2017. But Chicago finished with eight wins, 18 losses and eight draws this

Jason, Adam, and Ben talk about United’s draw against the Chicago Fire and what a wild ride this entire season has been. We break down how there weren’t a lot of good chances for either attack, and heap some praise on United’s defense as off late. We discuss Ben Olsen’s tactics in this game, and what starters and substitutes we would like to see against the Columbus Crew. In the second segment, we bring on Patrick Guldan of Massive Report to talk about United’s midweek matchup against the Columbus Crew. As much as Armas enjoyed seeing his team win the 2018 MLS Supporters' Shield on Sunday, the New York Red Bulls manager also knows the history of the team he coaches, and the one glaring void even Sunday's record-setting victory couldn't fill. The Red Bulls won their third Supporters' Shield in six years, setting a new MLS record for points in a season in the process, with a 1-0 win over Orlando City. The familiarity with the prize didn't temper the post-match celebrations, filled with hugs, singing and streams of confetti, but there was Armas, in the middle of his speech to the team's most fervent fans, letting them know that the prize they truly want is the one the Red Bulls are squarely focused on. The normally stoic coach delivered that line with far more passion and fire than usual, but Armas — who won an MLS Cup with the Chicago Fire 20 years ago — understands the Red Bulls' need for an MLS Cup.

When the Seattle Sounders joined MLS in 2009, no expansion team had even qualified for the playoffs since the Chicago Fire did it in 1998 (and they could hardly be called an expansion team when the league was only two years old at that point). With Wednesday’s win, the Sounders have now managed to do that in all 10 of their seasons. That’s an amazing accomplishment, and one I wonder if we’ve sort of taken for granted. The only other MLS team to qualify for 10 straight postseasons was the LA Galaxy, who pulled that off every year from 1996-2005. In six of those seasons, the Galaxy only had to avoid finishing in the bottom two of the league and in the other four they only had to finish outside

It’s been a long and depressing year on and off the pitch, and a lot of fans are simply waiting for it all to be over. The games still have to be played, but at this point in the 2018 MLS season, there’s nothing left to play for. Players are still fighting to keep their jobs, but from the club’s perspective, these last two games should be about giving younger players a chance to prove themselves and, almost as important, protecting the veterans from possible devastating injury. Which is why some of the Fire’s big-name stars should stay home this weekend. There’s
