Chicago Fire

When the Seattle Sounders joined MLS in 2009, no expansion team had even qualified for the playoffs since the Chicago Fire did it in 1998 (and they could hardly be called an expansion team when the league was only two years old at that point). With Wednesday’s win, the Sounders have now managed to do that in all 10 of their seasons. That’s an amazing accomplishment, and one I wonder if we’ve sort of taken for granted. The only other MLS team to qualify for 10 straight postseasons was the LA Galaxy, who pulled that off every year from 1996-2005. In six of those seasons, the Galaxy only had to avoid finishing in the bottom two of the league and in the other four they only had to finish outside

After the Tubbs fire destroyed his home, Will Abrams’ son read a book about the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. He learned that following the catastrophic blaze, the city required all new buildings to be constructed with fireproof materials like brick and stone. “Is our new house going to be made out...

The Chicago Fire are set to play their penultimate game of the season this Sunday when they travel down south to face Atlanta United. It’s been a long and depressing year on and off the pitch, and a lot of fans are simply waiting for it all to be over. The games still have to be played, but at this point in the 2018 MLS season, there’s nothing left to play for. Players are still fighting to keep their jobs, but from the club’s perspective, these last two games should be about giving younger players a chance to prove themselves and, almost as important, protecting the veterans from possible devastating injury. Which is why some of the Fire’s big-name stars should stay home this weekend. There’s

Carlos Vela scored two goals and had two assists, helping expansion club Los Angeles FC beat the Houston Dynamo 4-2 on rainy Friday night to clinch a top-two seed in the Western Conference. Los Angeles (16-8-8), which became the fifth expansion club to clinch a playoff spot last week, is tied with the 1998 Chicago Fire for the most points by an expansion team with 56. Vela tied it at 1 on a penalty kick in the 44th minute. He was tripped up by goalkeeper Tyler Deric, who got a hand on the penalty kick but couldn't stop it. Vela scored his 13th goal of the season in the 78th for a 4-1 lead. Adama Diomande made it 2-1 in the 53rd minute with an easy redirection of Vela's cross and Walker Zimmerman

D.C. United earned only four points combined from six matches against the top two teams in the Supporters Shield standings this season. United (11-11-8, 41 points) enters their Saturday afternoon clash at Audi Field two points beneath the line with two matches in hand on the sixth-place Montreal Impact. D.C. is unbeaten in its last six after an important come-from-behind, 2-1 victory against the Chicago Fire on Sunday, but has little room for a breather.

Wayne Rooney has thrown his support behind his embattled former manager Jose Mourinho, telling those Manchester United team-mates he once played alongside that they have under-performed in recent weeks and must take their share of the responsibility. Rooney was speaking after leading his new Major League Soccer side DC United to the ninth victory in 15 games with their new captain who scored both goals in a 2-1 win over Chicago Fire on Sunday. The 32-year-old made his remarks as Mourinho waited for a public show of faith from the United board in their manager who woke on Saturday to reports that he would be sacked over the weekend.

Wayne Rooney scored a second-half brace to give D.C. United a 2-1 win over Chicago Fire at Audi Field on Sunday. Visiting Chicago had taken a 51st-minute lead when Raheem Edwards danced his way through the D.C. backline and slotted past goalkeeper Bill Hamid.

Former England captain Wayne Rooney scored two goals as D.C. United rallied in the second half to beat the Chicago Fire 2-1 and keep their MLS Cup playoff push going. A Fire side featuring Rooney's former Manchester United teammate Bastian Schweinsteiger saw their post-season hopes extinguished long ago, but had visions of a spoiler's role when Raheem Edwards put them up 1-0 in the 51st minute with a fine solo run and finish from inside the penalty area. With a potentially damaging home defeat looming United responded.

Wayne Rooney scored twice in the second half to raise his season total to nine goals in 16 matches, and D.C. United rallied to beat the Chicago Fire 2-1 on Sunday. A former England captain who made his Major League Soccer debut in July, the 32-year-old striker has five goals in his last three games. Rooney tied the score in the 62nd minute when his slight deflection of Paul Arriola's cross caused goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland to bobble the ball, and Rooney tapped home the rebound.

There’s no room for D.C. United to rest on their laurels today, and no room to overlook a potential trap game today against the Chicago Fire. Facing their biggest game of the season, and possibly of the last five years, United produced one of the most lopsided wins in club history last time out by shellacking Montreal. It was great, but following a Montreal win yesterday, the Black-and-Red are 5 points out of the last playoff spot, exactly where they were when last week’s game kicked off. Any slip-ups against a Fire team that has been better of late than their spot in the standings would indicate would essentially throw away last week’s victory. Key player: Wayne Rooney We’ve tried to avoid doing

I think we’ve all gotten accustomed to DCU being Bad At Soccer. Even in our Wooden Spoon years, Fire fans were able to look ahead to this fixture and feel like we had a decent shot at a win. That no matter how bad things were in Bridgeview, we could gaze in the general direction of RFK Stadium and feel marginally better about our lot. Things are much different now. DCU are in the midst of a renaissance. A shiny new stadium. A detente between the front office and various supporter groups. Wayne Rooney, but like, good Wayne Rooney. DCU are dangerous now. And the Fire are... well, you know. In the long-term, DCU’s sudden turnaround, on and off the pitch, provide a potential blueprint for moving

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for soccer and video game fans alike. FIFA 19 is set to hit stores on Friday afternoon. As the pre-eminent soccer video game on the market (sorry PES), the in-game ratings of every player given by EA Sports are always a huge talking point around this time of year. They usually get it right. But sometimes, they get it oh so very wrong. The Chicago Fire are no different. Some of the players ratings are questionable at best and horrendous at worst. As a FIFA fanatic who’s been playing the game since 2004, I felt I had a valuable perspective to offer here. I’ve taken a look at the ratings for every Fire player and assessed how fair and accurate EA have been.

The Chicago Fire's encouraging three-game run coming off a lengthy break came to a screeching halt, succumbing to New York City FC, 2-0, Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, NY. Much like it was last Saturday against the New England Revolution in a 2-2 draw, the Fire produced a solid first-half performance on defense, exposing an NYCFC attack that had been struggling to produce goals in the middle of their worst run of form this season. This time, Fire head coach Veljko Paunovic opted to make changes to the starting XI that featured in New England and against Orlando City at Toyota Park on Sunday, September 16, as the team faced its second of three matches in a span of seven days. Stefan Cleveland got the nod in goal in place of Richard Sanchez and made the most out of the opportunity by being one of the Fire's bright spots in a losing effort.
