Ralph Hasenhuttl has a way with words and he is determined to turn Southampton’s fortunes around. The Austrian will need plenty of that in the weeks and months to come, but the mood at Southampton’s Staplewood training center seemed upbeat just 24 hours after his arrival was confirmed. Hasenhuttl, 51, has a huge task on his hands to drag Southampton up the Premier League table, out of the relegation zone and to give the entire club a new vision for the future. The Premier League’s first-ever Austrian head coach said he is aligned with Saints’ overall plan to develop young talent and to punch above their weight against the PL’s big boys, and Hasenhuttl knows his first task is to drag them out of the drop zone.

That confirms what the Mets have said privately - and has been reported all along - since the season ended. Machado and Harper, the “two big boys,” on the market are not in their crosshairs. Last season, this fixture became a Castilla followers worst nightmare. Santiago Solari’s men were taught a complete footballing lesson as they were outclassed by a side that would go on to reach the play-offs. Like all B teams, the time came for the big boys to fly the nest, and this season the tables had turned. On Thursday afternoon in AFC House in southern Kuala Lumpur, a Malaysian dream was realised as the name of a club from the country was pulled out of a ball and entered the group stage of the AFC Champions League. Next February, Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) will be one of the continental big boys -- or at least rub shoulders with them. The only problem was that as the draw was held about three weeks earlier than usual -- because the AFC has the 2019 Asian Cup starting in early January -- the East Asian season has yet to finish. This means that none of JDT's opponents are, as yet, known. With a posse of Malaysian journalists swelling the numbers at the small auditorium and with the anticipation palpable,

Malaysia were made to wait until late in the second half to secure their second victory in AFF Cup Group A following a spirited showing from Laos. Norshahrul Idlan headed home the only goal of Malaysia's Suzuki Cup opener against Cambodia. The first two months of the Ontario university football season belong to the playmakers. But once you reach November, it’s the big boys in the trenches who take centre stage. That’s been the foundation of every successful team Greg Marshall has built. The key names now for Western are guys like Dylan Giffen, David Brown, […]

The Exploding Heads also explore some interesting Mo Salah statue lookalikes and look at some curious goal celebrations over the Premier League weekend. So much of the focus of the Champions League is on the big clubs with the big names from the big leagues. But what about the rest? What about the teams who may be top dog domestically and find themselves relative minnows on the European stage? How do they begin to prepare for the big boys? Paulo Fonseca, manager of Shakhtar Donetsk will be facing Manchester City for the fourth time in two years this week. Last season, his team kept a clean sheet (and had the bulk of possession) in the first half...
