Why do people believe absurd lies about George Soros? The answer depends on the platforms you use, the media influencers you follow and the memes you see. Once an anti-Semitic rumor moved from fringe to the mainstream, it took less than two weeks for violence to erupt. The false allegation that liberal philanthropist George Soros was funding or supporting a caravan of Honduran refugees heading to the U.S. spread wildly from a single tweet posted on Oct. 14.Along with far-right memes, that allegation helped motivate both an alleged mail-bomber and a mass shooter at a Pittsburgh synagogue. The way these messages traveled across the internet in this short time span is just one example of how extremist messages and memes circulate with incredible speed across mainstream social media platforms. From our vantage point as researchers of visual and digital communication, memes – short, often image-based forms of communication – are powerful engines of persuasion, even though they can...

The Forecaddie recently slipped on a virtual reality headset to watch a young girl named Beatrice haul water back to her rural Zambian village. It wasn’t lost on The Man Out Front that he was watching Beatrice toil from the comfort of a cushy chair at the Ritz-Carlton, Naples, Fla., only a handful of days away from Thanksgiving. The passion that Betsy King poured into an LPGA Hall of Fame career has been directed toward charitable giving now for more than a decade through her Golf Fore Africa initiative. This year alone King is closing in on $2.5 million. At the LPGA’s season-ending CME Group Tour Championship, King watched with interest as Amy Olson played in the final group over the weekend.

The NRA doesn’t care about black heroes. On Sunday night, around 4 a.m., a Chicagoland police officer shot and killed Jemel Roberson, a black man, after reports of a shooting came from a bar in a Cook County suburb. Roberson, 26, was not the assailant — he was the armed security guard who had secured the alleged shooter and saved lives. He was shot for saving a person's life while being black. I wonder why President Trump and the NRA have been silent on this one? That night, Roberson, who was employed by Manny’s Blue Room, had escorted a group of drunk men out of the bar. According to WGN9 Chicago, witnesses say one came back with a gun and opened fire. Roberson apprehended a person involved in the shooting in an effort to protect the other patrons as they exited the club. Midlothian police officers arrived on the scene with little to no details, and it appears that they saw a black man with a gun, ignored his uniform and hat labeled SECURITY, and shot him. ...

In Honduras she had run a stall selling pupusas, a local tortilla, but been forced to shut down after being extorted by street gangs. "If you don't pay them they kill you," said the woman, drawing a finger slowly across her throat. "It's like a tax of war, money to bandits, and you can't not pay. "They made me pay 300 lempira a week - $12. To you it does not sound like a lot, but for me it was a lot. I had to close." After shutting her stall three months ago the 35-year-old, who gave her name as Carolina, decided to head north. She had seen Honduran television coverage of the US-bound migrant caravan that was then just forming. She brought her four-year-old daughter and a small bag of clothes. There was no room for toys. The girl caught a fever as they crossed the Mexican border, and cried the whole way as she was pushed in a stroller. "I've been walking so I don't know what Donald Trump is saying at the moment," said Carolina...

The move "would be reckless and stupid." Concerns are mounting after President Donald Trump confirmed on Saturday that he will withdraw from a Cold War-era nuclear arms control treaty with Russia following reports that National Security Adviser John Bolton had been pushing the plan behind closed doors despite warnings from experts that ditching the agreement "would be reckless and stupid."The Guardian had reported Friday that Bolton and an ally in the White House have been working to convince members of the administration to support the United States withdrawing from the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces treaty (INF) on the grounds that Russia is violating it. Nuclear arms control experts and others rapidly responded with alarm. Many agreed that Russia's alleged violation "merits a strong response" but noted a withdrawal could alienate European allies and raise the chances of armed conflict. The president's comments on Saturday spurred more alarm, with Dar...

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will welcome their first child in spring 2019, Kensington Palace has announced. Harry and Meghan informed members of the Royal family on Friday at the wedding of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank at Windsor Castle, where the duke and duchess were also married earlier in the year. Prince Harry was once third in line to the throne but has since moved down - and where will his first child fit into the succession? Most family members moved down a place in April following the birth of Prince Louis, whose arrival made history when he slotted in as fifth in line to the throne. The birth of Prince William and his wife Kate's third child meant the line of succession now sees the new Prince of Cambridge follow the Prince of Wales, Duke of Cambridge, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. Historically, Princess Charlotte would have lost her spot to her younger brother, but new legislation introduced in 2013 overhauled the order of succession.  Prince...

The happy news came hours after the couple were seen arriving in Sydney for their first major international tour since their Windsor Castle wedding in May. Following the news speculation is already mounting around the name of the next royal baby.  The baby is expected to take the surname Sussex in the same way that Prince William's children, George, Charlotte and Louis have taken his title Cambridge as their last name at school and nursery. Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice have previously used the surname York, after their father’s title Prince Andrew, the Duke of York. But the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's baby will not be a prince or a princess unless the Queen steps in. The Duchess of Cornwall is not going to Princess Eugenie’s wedding because she is also hosting a shooting party at her Scottish home this weekend, sources have told the Telegraph. It was revealed earlier this week that Prince Charles’s wife Camilla will not attend the Friday nuptials at Windsor Castle, the only senior member of the royal family to miss the celebrations. Clarence House has said Camilla had a “previous commitment” attending a local school harvest festival near Birkhall, Charles’s home at Balmoral. Two other jobs were also announced this week. But an insider said: “The truth is that Camilla has a house party for a few friends. “They are arriving on Friday and will be there over the weekend. “The date of the wedding was known eight months ago so it’s strange Camilla organised her house party this weekend.” The alleged “snub” will fuel rumours that there is a royal rift at the heart of the monarchy. Camilla and Sarah Ferguson have never seen eye to...

A charity boss has told how the young Princess Eugenie was left profoundly moved after visiting her teenage counterparts suffering from cancer in hospital. The president of the Teenage Cancer Trust said the Queen’s granddaughter showed great maturity meeting cancer patients for the first time and trying to raise their morale in the darkest of circumstances. Speaking on the eve of Eugenie’s wedding Myrna Whiteson said she hoped the Princess, 28, would carry on her role as patron of the charity following her marriage to Jack Brooksbank, and that her husband would be able to share her charitable duties. Mrs Whiteson, who founded the Teenage Cancer Trust with her husband Dr Adrian Whiteson, said the two girls had become involved in its work from an early age through their mother, the Duchess of York. She told The Daily Telegraph: “The Duchess of York officially opened our first specialist cancer unit in 1990 and has attended almost all of our 28 subsequent new unit openings across th...
