President Donald Trump's administration is considering giving U.S. troops on the border with Mexico the authority to carry out medical screening of migrants, U.S. officials told Reuters on Tuesday. The proposal, which is still in draft form and is circulating within the administration, would involve the military in screenings for things like illness and injury only if U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency personnel were overwhelmed and unable to do so on their own, the officials said. The proposal would expand the mission for the Pentagon, which said previously it did not expect its forces to directly interact with migrants.

They can't help themselves. At 29, Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who defeated Republican economics professor Anthony Pappas by a landslide in Queens and the Bronx in the 2018 midterms, is the youngest woman ever elected to the House of Representatives. Ocasio-Cortez has her critics, some of whom have trying to use her financial status to disparage her—and the native New Yorker hasn’t been shy about responding to them. One of the silly memes about Ocasio-Cortez is that she dresses too nicely for a “socialist” who addresses class inequality. On Twitter, reporter Eddie Scarry posted, “That jacket and coat don’t look like a girl who struggles.”But in a November 20 tweet, Ocasio-Cortez described some of her struggles in life, posting“My dad died when I was 18, my mom scrubbed toilets + drove school buses, I bartended to help her, and still won a Congressional primary at 28. Tuesday on MSNBC, network host Ali Velshi said President Donald Trump’s statement standing by Saudi Arabia despite allegations Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was responsible for the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi sounded like it was “written by a 7-year-old.” Velshi said, “First of all, it’s written like it’s written by a 7-year-old.” He continued, “It starts with America first with an exclamation mark…and then it talks about Iran. So there’s this distraction going on. The US space agency has ordered a sweeping safety review of operations and workplace culture, including drug-free policies, at Boeing and SpaceX, two companies working to send astronauts to space, US media said Tuesday. The review was "prompted by the recent behavior of SpaceX's founder, Elon Musk, according to three officials with knowledge of the probe, after he took a hit of marijuana and sipped whiskey on a podcast streamed on the Internet," said the Washington Post, which first reported on the story. NASA declined to comment on the allegations, but confirmed the review would start next year as the agency focuses "on safe and successful commercial crew missions" to the International Space Station.

Ten years ago, Indiegogo launched the modern era of crowdfunding by creating a place where anyone could pitch their idea, product, or creative endeavor to the entire world, asking for the funds to make it reality. Today there are no shortage of crowdfunding sites, and even though Indiegogo isn’t as large as rival Kickstarter, it’s still tremendously influential, offering entrepreneurs not just a funding platform, but also support beyond their campaigns, with tools to ease the transition from concept to launch. Indiegogo has always had a more worldwide audience than its peers, and now current CEO David Mandelbrot wants to take things further with more outreach to inventors in China as he leads the venture-funded company to profitability. Turkey is not entirely satisfied with the level of cooperation it is receiving from Saudi Arabia over the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and may seek a formal United Nations inquiry over the issue if its liaising with Riyadh comes to an impasse, Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters in Washington meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Cavusoglu said Turkey has shared the latest information on the Khashoggi killing with the United States and repeated Ankara's stance that the truth had to come out on who gave the orders to kill the journalist. Khashoggi, a U.S.-based Washington Post columnist who was a critic of the Saudi government run by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was killed in October at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

The growing cycle of violence in Tripura, India, is a lesson to us all. These stories are hard to write about. There are too many of them, and there is too much to say about them.Tripura is a state in the northeast of India. It is a small state, with a population of 3 million (that’s 0.3 percent of India’s population). Ruled by a ruthless royal family in the past, the state became part of India in 1949 thanks in large part to a communist rebellion that continues to define the state’s culture. The Left Front—a communist alliance—governed the state from 1978 to 1988 and then again from 1993 to 2018. This year, thanks to an aggressive push from India’s prime minister Narendra Modi, the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its local allies defeated the Left Front. Then, the tremor began. A few days after the election, men from the BJP came to the home of Atafur Miah, the vice president of the local government in Bhagyapur, Dharmanagar. They had a simple message: qui...

If you take a look at recent events you might imagine that scientists searching for the worst year of human existence would have a hard time topping 2018. I mean, there are mass shootings every other day (and sometimes every day), wildfires destroying huge areas, hurricanes wiping communities off the map, and a planet that is slowly dying because we can't stop messing stuff up. And that's just the United States. Elsewhere there's drought, famine, disease, and never-ending conflicts. Humans are just a mess right now, but a new study by researchers at the University of Maine and University of Nottingham have determined that the worst year to be a human isn't 2018. It was the year 536. A pair of studies published in the journal Antiquity, paint a dire picture of life for humans starting in AD 536. It was then that a combination of events began to shape some of mankind's darkest days, starting with what is known as the "dust veil event" which blanketed much o...

On Tuesday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “America’s Newsroom,” Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz argued that private email use shouldn’t be criminalized, whether the email use was done by Hillary Clinton or Ivanka Trump and criticized the “hypocrisy on parade.” Dershowitz said, “I think it’s hypocrisy on parade. Each side uses whatever arguments they can to help and bolster their partisan position. Look, everybody uses private emails. We now have a list of probably a dozen people in public life who have used emails. Apparently, Ivanka Trump used the emails only for scheduling purposes. There was no classified material. The emails are all preserved. It’s a non-issue. It’s just partisan bickering. We should not be criminalizing the use of private emails, whether by Hillary Clinton or by Ivanka Trump.” Follow Ian Hanchett on Twitter @IanHanchett

Trump's reaction could inspire more attacks on the free press. President Donald Trump is continuing to back the Saudi regime, despite overwhelming evidence that its most powerful leader, Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, is directly implicated in the assassination of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi. In a farcical statement about the killing — strewn with superfluous exclamation points — the president lashed out at Iran and repeated bogus Saudi talking points about Khashoggi being an "enemy of the state" and a member of the Muslim Brotherhood."Our intelligence agencies continue to assess all information, but it could very well be that the Crown Prince had knowledge of this tragic event – maybe he did and maybe he didn’t!" the statement said. On the contrary, reports suggest that the CIA is convinced that the crown prince ordered the killing himself. David Laufman, a former top counterintelligence official in the Justice Department, condemned Trump's cowardly...

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Tuesday it was "shameful" that U.S. President Donald Trump had pledged support for Saudi Arabia despite the murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi in its consulate. Trump had issued a statement that began: "The world is a very dangerous place! "The country of Iran, as an example, is responsible for a bloody proxy war against Saudi Arabia in Yemen, trying to destabilize Iraq’s fragile attempt at democracy, supporting the terror group Hezbollah in Lebanon, propping up dictator Bashar Assad in Syria (who has killed millions of his own citizens), and much more." Trump went on to vow to stay a "steadfast partner" of Riyadh despite saying that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman may have known about the plan to murder Khashoggi in Istanbul.
